65. What you need to know about ESY (Extended School Year)
Dec 09, 2021ESY services are defined as special education or related services that are provided beyond the normal school year for the purpose of providing FAPE (Free and Appropriate Education). It is a required part of IDEA, Individuals with Disabilities Act, and is provided at no cost to you, the family according to the student’s Individual Education Plan.
There are many misconceptions about ESY services and what they are and are not. In this episode, I explain the differences and why it is important that you are thinking about ESY now, prior to the holiday break.
I go through the six factors that are considered by the team to determine ESY eligibility and what each of them means.
If you believe that your child would benefit from ESY services, it is important that you request an IEP meeting right at the beginning of the new year after the holiday break to discuss with the team.
